Editorial Review for Bok Choy Garden CLOSED – by Tienlon Ho
In Short
Run by a friendly family that sticks to a strict vegan diet, this no-frills joint is the perfect standby for vegetarians and vegans craving Chinese. The dishes range from typical--sizzling rice soup--to unusual--sauteed green soybeans with tofu and seaweed or gluten puff with curry sauce. And while the spartan dining room and harsh flourescent lighting create a somewhat unromantic ambience, this is a reliable stop for a healthy, low-key meal.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasThe brown vinyl booths are comfortable enough -- but not compared to your couch, so try the lightening fast take-out.
Know Before You GoThe super-fresh dishes change regularly, so check the board. Expect unusual flavors since the chef never uses garlic, onion, or egg
What to DrinkTry the freshly squeezed lemonade or the soy milk.

I am a meat eater, but I also like to try new cuisine. Bok Choy always has been well known in the City and has a great reputation for vegan. I decided to try it. The Taro Root Fish was incredible. Taro root, dipped in batter and fried, shaped like a large fish. Sweet and sour sauce on the side. Truly a world class dish. We also had the Beef Meat B*lls on skewers. These seemed to be portebella mushroom based, and were similar to normal veggie burgers. My friend liked them more than I did. As stated in the City Search's editorial review, this place is no frills. I am very picky about eating out. But I definitely would go back to try other dishes, because the Taro Root Fish truly was incredible.
Pros: The food is good, service was very pleasant
Cons: No frills atmosphere

Great place for Chinese 'mock meats' and fresh veggie dishes. New owner since Nov. '06 Ken- very friendly and enthusiastic- has kept the most popular dishes, is adding new creations and is very open to suggestions and feedback. Fresh Jasmine tea and homemade lemonade with twist of lime are also very refreshing. Don't forget to also try the hot and sour soup! We are visitors and always stop here on our SF trips!!
